Charlotte Church is a 12 (now 13) year old, little, Welsh girl, who sings. My preconception of an angel singing, in fact my preconception of child singing, is the pure bell-like sound of a Vienna Boys' Choir soprano. This recording is something very different from that, something more, something truly amazing. Ms. Church sounds very mature. Her voice is rich. She has a huge range. She chooses excellent music to sing (including the perfect Pie Jesu, from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem). And she doesn't wear real fur (that is from the liner notes; on the cover she is shown wearing fake fur). I have listened to this recording five times in the last two days, and it sounds better each time.
The above album is also a delightful video, with home movies and interviews added on. Ms. Church's willingness to share her playful humor with her audience (she takes videos of the audience at the Albert Hall) is particularly entertaining.
Charlotte Church now has a second album. Some of the pieces are more operatic in nature. It is good, but I like the first album better. I hope she will do an entire album of Welsh songs some day (the first on contained two or three Welsh songs). She also has come out with a Christmas hodge podge which is not bad. And she has a second video.
Charlotte now has several other albums, some of which I have not heard.
