During the Olympics in Barcelona, Bob Costas informed us that the word "gaudy" came from the Spanish architect Gaudi i Cornet. But Gaudi lived from 1852-1926, and the word gaudy has been traced back to 1520-30, possibly from the name of a kind of feast (gaudy, 1400-50), and originally from Latin (gaudium).
