Gentlemen:
I was reading, in your newspaper, that we are losing the war against England. Imagine my surprise when I found myself quoted as saying, "Give me liberty or give me death!" I assure you that I never said anything of the sort. And if I did say it, I certainly did not mean it. And if I did mean it, I am sure that it was the result of the excitement of the moment. I suppose this all happened during that weekend in Philadelphia, the weekend that I do not remember. My friends, who call themselves "patriots" assure me that I had a good time that weekend. They probably made up the story about "liberty or death." I beg that you print a retraction. I am too young to die.
P.S. If we start winning this war, no retraction will be necessary. Please destroy this letter.
Your humble servant,
P. Henry
