Quite a few people have emailed asking how to become an Egyptologist. I am not an Egyptologist, but here is my response to these people, based on my limited knowledge:
Archeology and Anthropology seem to be the main areas of study, with specialization in Egyptology. Probably go to a large university. Some of these are universities: Egypt WWW Index. This page looks helpful: Institutional home pages. The University of Chicago is famous for Egyptology. UCLA, University of Memphis, and Brown University have WWW pages.
Egyptologists usually work (as teachers and/or researchers) at a university. Students also work on digs. Egyptologists may hire people of various specialties (artists, surveyors, x-ray experts, photographers...).
