Smiley Faces, Etc.

© Copyright 1998, Jim Loy

On the Internet, you sometimes see this dude and his relatives:

:-)

People don't want to offend, so they "smile when they say that, pardner." Personally, I think that we see too much of this. Some people use these at the end of almost every sentence. But, it doesn't hurt to know what they mean. Here is a list, from the World Almanac:

:-) Smile :-b... Drooling
;-) Wink =-o Argh!
:-* Kiss {*} Hug and a kiss
:-( Unhappy :p Raz
:-o Shouting

Internet abbreviations, given in the same source, are:

BTW By the way HHOS Ha, ha, only serious
F2F Face to face (personal meeting) IMHO In my humble opinion
FCOL For crying out loud IMO In my opinion
FWIW For what it's worth LOL Laughing out loud
FYI For your information OTOH On the other hand
GOK God only knows ROFL or ROTFL Rolling on the floor, laughing
HHOK Ha, ha, only kidding TAFN That's all for now

Two or three of these seem to be fairly important (BTW, FYI, and IMO).
