Spirographs

© Copyright 2003, Jim Loy

Ellipse #9 shows a spirograph (one circle rolling inside another) with a period of two. Here we see two spirographs with periods of three. The first has a radius of 1/3, the second has a radius of 2/3. The curve that touches the larger circle at three points is the same in both spirographs, and is called a hypocycloid. The center of the smaller circle traces a circle in both spirographs.
