Many years ago, I was nominated for the post of Eastern Vice President of the Montana Chess Association. I refused, saying that I was too busy. I was assured that the Vice Presidents had no duties. That sounded dopey to me. But I reluctantly accepted the nomination, and was elected, unopposed.
Later that year, the President, Dennis Petrak, complained in the Montana Chess News that the Vice Presidents were not doing anything. I think he suggested a few things for us to do. I informed him of my election platform (too busy). And I have not been to a business meeting since.
Politics is ugly, even at this microscopic level.
