At the local Hastings Video, on the mystery book shelves, is the book Robert Crais by L. A. Requiem, you can find it under "R". Wrong. Of course the book is L. A. Requiem by Robert Crais (under "C"). Maybe there is some justice in this world. Maybe this is the just reward for those authors whose names are printed larger than their book titles.
I suppose shelving mistakes are common in any store. Another mistake at Hastings is The Atoms of Language, apparently a book on linguistics, which is shelved under science and technology. Quite often, science books are shelved in the science fiction section, and vice versa. Then there is the problem some people have with the alphabet, compounded by the "customers" who put books in the software department and elsewhere. Customers also put their drinks on the book shelves, shelve books backwards, and even mutilate books.
Addendum:
I recently found Night Watch (humorous science fiction or fantasy), by Terry Pratchett misshelved in "novels" at the local Hastings. I had been waiting for it, and luckily noticed it when looking at another book. Pratchett is a very very popular author (see The Discworld Series - by Terry Pratchett), and his fans will probably not find his books if they are shelved under novels. Well, I took the four copies to the books desk and told the girl that they were misshelved, and that they should be science fiction/fantasy. Two days later, all four copies were back in novels. I assume the computer told those folks that is where they belonged, which probably means that this book is misshelved in Hastings Video stores across the nation. I found another book of Pratchett's, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, shelved in children's books. It is probably wonderful for children, humorous, clean, and delightfully disrespectful. But again, Pratchett fans will not be able to find the book.
