THOUGHTS ON OCTOBER ISSUE NAT. TY GAMES.
ACFB # 269 G.30, V-1. Chinook-Cooper. This is the game selected by referee Don Lafferty, as the best played against Chinook, and was awarded the $100 prize furnished by Jonathan Schaeffer. More detailed notes by myself appeared in ACFB # 265, P-7.
G.30, V-2, Note-B. As mentioned, this 10-19 was played by M. Rex v R. Chamberlain in their 1976 World-Title mail play-offs: varying from the pp 12-19 in KcKelvie-Dallas, In Note-C, Jerry Childers 7-10*, is correct to draw, also played by Rex which continued as given here to draw. See 1976 ID book, P-23, V-3A.
G.32, V1. The Tinsley-Lafferty 1-6* at 18th may be forced. In their recent 1997 world 3-move match. Pat McCarthy tried 10-15?, 3-6, 1-10 instead and lost to Ron King after 28-24.
G.34, trunk: 7-11 at Note-A was favored by Bobby Martin. He once sent me 22-18 (instead of 31-27) then 6-10 (instead of 16-20) 25-22, 11-15, 18-11, 8-15, 22-18, 15-22, 26-17, 9-13, 30-25 etc to an easy draw-Martin-Cap Howe, in mailplay back in the 70's.
G.36, trunk-Note-A: 5-9, 24-20,( 30-25 back to pp, but not 32-28?, 14-18!, 22-15, 13-22, 26-17, 9-14 BW-E.F. Hunt) 3-7, 20-11 then 8-24* (instead of 7-16 to a WW) 27-20, 4-8, 23-19, 7-11, 26-23, 11-15, 32-28, 15-24, 28-19, 8-11, 30-26, 11-15, 19-16, 12-19, 23-16, 15-18, 22-15, 17-13 then 15-19 etc in time to draw. From the E.F. Hunt mss; July 1951. Although Mr. Hunt had temporarily retired from active play after 1946 11th ACA ty, he continued to work on his mss; later returning to play in the 1961 So Ty and the 1962 Nat. Ty at Peoria. Disappointed with his play here (although he tied with Basil Case for 1st!) He retired once again, this time for good at age 60, with failing health. RLF
CRITICS CORNER-G. 20, King-Edwards, August Acfb, Note-E at end.-19-16 etc to draw. But go 19-15 instead and I find no draw. 19-15*, 7-11, (17-21, 26-23, 7-11, 23-8, 12-16, 18-14 WW) 15-10, 11-15, 10-7, 15-19, 7-3, 19-24, (17-21, 3-7 (or 26-22 ED) 19-24, 7-10, 24-27, 10-15 WW) Peter Knoester. Ontario.
11th Game in the recent McCarthy-King match. (King-White) 9-13, 23-18, 11-15, 18x11, 8x15, 24-20, 3-8, 27-23, 15-19, 23x16, 12x19, 22-18, 8-11, 25-22, 6-9, 29-25, 9-14, 18x9, 5x14, 32-27, 4-8, 27-24, 11-15, 20-16, 7-11, 16x7, 2x11, 31-27, 11-16, 24-20, 8-11, 27-24, 14-18, 21-17, 1-5, 25-21, 18x25, 17-14, 10x17, 21x14, 25-29, 14-10, 5-9, 10-7, 9-14, 7-2, 14-18, 2-7, 18-23, 7-10, 29-25, 30x21, 23x30, 10-14, 30-26, 14-9, 26-23, 9-14 drawn. (Ed: As published)
"I have 2 problems with this. 1st, at 3rd move from end why not the 14-18 2x1 and draw. 2nd. After the retreat 14-9??, 26-23 and the return 9-14??, 23-18* now w ins. As a rank amateur, I find it hard to question the Masters.
I am very happy to be a member of your fine organization. Dave Nemschick. (Editor: These games were published on my Web pages, courtesy of George Miller. Seems incredible! Perhaps the results is a mis-print???)
