No. 8. 1-6* 7-10 12-16! 20-18 6-31. White Wins. Lees' Guide, P. 194, No. 37, after 4th (18-15.)

No. 9. 10-15* 19-10 16-20 24-19 11-15. Drawn. Another common but useful idea.

No. 10. 13-9* 23-16 (5-14 22-25 21-30 31-26 23-16. ) 31-26 5-14 22-25 21-30 6-9 30-23 9-11. W. W. The author J. George was from Cardiff?capital of Wales. This nice shot was Lees' Guide, No. 47.

No. 11. 12-16* (A) 15-6 14-17 21-14 31-27 19-12 27-2. Red Wins.

(A) Oldbury demonstrated this shot to kibitzers in the 50th Scottish Tourney. For his interesting commentary, see ST50, P. 41, Game No. 50 (From 10-15 21-17 6-10.)

Gerry's Correction Corner.

1. Gerry Corrects Jerry (Red to Play & Draw): 15-19(A) 22-15 24-27 31-24 20-27 26-22 27-31 22-18 31-27 18-14 27-23 14-10 6-9 13-6 19-24 28-19 23-14. Drawn. GL.

(A) An interesting maneuver that temporarily sacrifices a man and then gets it back with a king attack. Jerry Childers went 24-27 31-24 20-27 11-8! (prevents the in-and-out: 26-23 27-31 23-14 3-7 11-2 31-26 2-9 26-10 25-21 5-14. Draws.) 3-12 26-23. White now lines up for a two-for-one and wins. (No. 92 in Jerry's 100 Problems.)

2. Bob Podoff (White to Play & Win): A correction of Heffner?missed by many old time greats. 21-17*! 14-21 23-18* 16-23 18-14 9-18 15-31 12-16 27-18 20-27 31-24* 4-8 18-14 21-25 14-10 8-11 32-27* 25-30 10-6* 30-26 6-1 26-22 1-6 11-15 6-10 16-19 24-28 15-18 10-15 19-23 28-32 (A) White Wins.

(A) A very fine correction of published play. Bob had a serious operation and is still recuperating. Get well soon, Bob. We miss your fine contributions to the game. (GL) Continue: 23-26 27-23 18-27 32-30. This two-for-one is treated in Boland's Familiar Themes, page 13. There the theme is not given a title. Let's Play Checkers by Grover and Wiswell also treat it on page 103 where it is called, quite appropriately, "Nipped at the Wire." [Editor]

Note: This correction was given in the October issue but with the wrong diagram due an editorial mistake. It was previosly published in the November, 1995 issue of the English Draughts Journal.
